NewWest.net, a regional website once based in Missoula and voted Best Local Website in the Indy's annual readers poll, has gone offline. A message on the homepage informs readers that the site is "temporarily" down as the business "relocates to new headquarters and transitions/updates the site's new technology." No timetable is mentioned for the possible relaunch.
Reports of the office behind The Old Post closing up surfaced over the summer, and some former staffers were made aware of today's announcement a few weeks ago. The news comes 18 months after the site's co-founder, Jonathan Weber, left for San Francisco.
Over the years NewWest.net has staked a reputation for hosting influential business conferences and publishing some award-winning journalism. One of the best examples is Hal Herring's 2005 six-part story on meth in the Flathead. You can't find the story through NewWest right now, but the cached version is still available. There's also the wildly popular 2007 chicken video by Anne Medley and Jonathan Stumpf, which you can see below.
Here's hoping we see NewWest return sometime soon.
