Concerned kayakers take to Yellowstone River

Posted By on Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 10:45 AM

A group of local boaters aren't interested in waiting for officials and have prepared to collect data on the oil spill this weekend.

Word's traveling fast about the volunteer effort. Organizer Gary Steele sent out the initial announcement:

Saturday July 16th we will meet in billings and have a briefing as to how we will gather data regarding the possible/expected oil deposits in the river. We will be using our personal GPS units, cameras and oil collection spill kits to document our findings. We will coordinate shuttles and assign sections of the river to teams of boaters.

After this organizational meeting we will hit the River! At the end of the day we will regroup and have our data collected & compiled by our very own computer geeks.

If you're interested in attending, contact either Steele or American Whitewater with your name, email and phone number, and put "Yellowstone Volunteer" in the subject line.
