The Missoula Art Museum announced over the weekend that local filmmaker Andy Smetanka will serve an artist residency during the month of March and create a stop-motion animation film about the Garden City.

From the release:

Smetanka will be working in the Lela Autio Education Gallery, revealing his creative process which demonstrates his fascinating animation techniques ... The traditional animation process is labor intensive and obsessive and the creation of this film from the first frame of footage to the final note of soundtrack will take place entirely within MAM.

Smetanka has previously made music videos for bands like Volumen and The Decemberists, as well as contributed to films by Guy Maddin and Doug Hawes-Davis. He also writes for the Indy occasionally as a film reviewer.

Expect to watch the new Missoula film during First Friday on April 1.
