Palin coming to Missoula, but at what cost?

Posted by Skylar Browning on Tue, Mar 9, 2010 at 8:45 PM

SarahPalinBookCover1.jpg
Missoulian reporter Keila Szpaller scored the scoop on Sarah Palin's scheduled September visit to the Garden City. The former VP candidate and Alaska governor, and current Fox analyst and best-selling author will speak at a Teen Challenge Montana fundraiser at the Hilton Garden Inn. Tickets to the event cost $100 and 1,600 spots are available, which would generate $160,000 in ticket sales. Teen Challenge's Jan Henderson says the group hopes to raise $50,000 from Palin's appearance.

That jibes with Palin's reported speaking fee means the group will lose money, if published reports of her fee are accurate. Politico says Iowa Republicans balked at Palin's $100,000 price late last year. Newsweek tossed water on the Politico report, not disputing the fee but clarifying that Palin demand a fee for what amounted to a campaign event.

In January, Politico again reported the $100,000 fee, but added that it dips to $75,000 for appearances in the West. Fox News confirmed the numbers, but added she donates the money to "campaigns, candidates and issues."

So, how much will Palin receive for coming to Missoula? When Szpaller asked about Palin's speaking fee, Henderson said it was "confidential."

I think what he means by "rais[ing] $50,000 from Palin's appearance" is raising $50,000 on top of whatever is Palin's fee for this event. $160,000 is what you get from 1600 times $100. Assuming a $100,000 fee, that gets you close to $50,000

So they "balk" at paying $100 to hear Mrs. Palin speak, but it' OK to pay this to see The Rolling Stones in concert. If you don't want to pay $100 to hear her speak, then fine - stay home. But don't try to make her out to be some kind of villan just because she makes money.

Thanks, "poundingtherock." You're right. I clarified the numbers above.

And "F. Moh," I don't think -- and didn't suggest -- anyone would balk at the $100 ticket to hear her speak. It was a group of Republicans in Iowa who balked at her $100,000 speaking fee.

You're comparing Palin to the Rolling Stones? Are you on drugs? On one hand there is quite possibly the most mentally handicapped famous politician of all time, and on the other the best rock band of all time......No comparison

Getting all of the information before posting a blog is usually a good idea... somehow the author missed the fact that Garden of Read'n AND Teen Challenge are hosting Sarah Palin, which means that Garden of Read'n paid a portion of of Sarah Palin's speaking fee. As for those who plan to protest, you are also uninformed. This is not a political event, and is purely to help raise funds for Teen Challenge. I suggest that those who blindly oppose this on grounds of hatred for Sarah Palin research what Teen Challenge is about and what this fundraiser will mean for them. Teen Challenge is the focus here, and most of what the benefit is will focus on this nonprofit, not Sarah Palin. She is coming to support them, and will only be part of the program.

I think Teen Challenge is a wonderful program, it has helped thousands in a very positive way... but Sarah Palin is not what I consider a great roll model. A very self serving, attention seeking and money hungry individual who could do more right now by stabilizing her own life with her families needs.

What shitty, unnecessary, and obviously politically motivated "reporting."

At least the Missoulian had the balls to pick up the phone and actually call somebody. Browning couldn't even be bothered to do that, much less do any of his own reporting.

At least you could attempt some objectivity before rushing to type out some screed against a local charity. Many charities in this valley are facing huge obstacles keeping their head above water, and all the local news media can do is fan the flames of liberal apoplexy to restart the Two Minutes Hate against Palin. Grow a pair, and stop doing more harm than good in our community to sell newspapers.

There is probably much more to the story than what we have been made aware. What would someone expect from a rag like the "Independent"? Journalism? We'll see more of this crap as the date nears. Maybe Tom Tomorrow will bless us with his ever-insightful opinions.

hey tadams and zootownhorsepucky, its not that we reasoning folks hate mrs palin, we just recognize her as a dumbass unworthy of respect from the badass teen challenge babes. (of course she's also not worthy of getting elected to another office that she'll only bail on when the going gets tough either, but that's another story...)

personally, i'm completely supportive of the teen challenge, and have seen first hand how the opportunities provided by the program can really help young mothers. but bringing in a politically divisive and dangerously ignorant woman like mrs palin to speak is simply counterproductive to a program that should reward excellence, determination, and a refusal to quit when the going gets tough- even if the milti-million dollar book contract beckons. instead these impressive young ladies will get preached to, complete with an incoherent sentence structure and un-thought-out sound bites, and because she's kinda cute the idiots will adore her.

no we don't hatin mrs palin, we just think she's ill-suited to tell the brave and hard-working women who make up teen challenge what's up in the world. they simply deserve better.

I kind of wish Teen Challenge wouldnt have aligned themselves with Palin by using her as a fundraising opportunity. I support teen challange by shopping at their thrift store. Now I don't feel okay doing that any more. I don't want to support an organization that gives money to someone that I think is so detrimental to coherent collaborative efforts in our society. And yes, while they will be fundraising for their worthy organization, they are also raising money for Sarah Palin and her monsterous, corrupt, (unchristian) divisive campaign machine. I dont think my boycotting of their store is going to hurt them though, they clearly have drawn a line in the sand and now all the people who agree with Palin's divisive messages will probably fill the gap that all the progressives leave when they stop shopping there. I'm disappointed that I feel ethically obligated to avoid that store and coffee cart now.

"detrimental to coherent collaborative efforts in our society"? "monsterous, corrupt, (unchristian) divisive campaign machine"? What the hell does that mean? It just kills me people who criticise Sarah Palin, do the even listen to her speaches and take the time to see what she stands for? Lets keep the focus on her and not say anything about Barack Obama who is leading us on a collision course to total economic disaster by his insessent drive to give us socialist health care instead of working on common sense solutions to get the economy back on track. You liberals just kill me with your big words and lack of common sense.

Ms. Palin has been touted as standing up for great values and her beliefs are supposedly those of which are Christian - God and family. Truthfully, I just find that some of her statements are anything but Christian-like. I am disappointed in the mis-truths that were put out there along that campaign trail such as the Pres aligning with terrorists, and fear mongering (even now, with the health care discussions, and promoting that our Gov't is too big, we need less involvement (with her and McCain we could've counted on MORE disarray, possible privatization of Soc Sec system), etc. We would be in more of a mess than we are NOW, I truly believe this

I'm no socialist and I don't like seeing this label slapped on everyone who doesn't fit the conservative agenda, but I am frothing at the thought of Palin coming to town. Let's make no mistake about it, she's here to further her own career and pad her pocket to the tune of $100,000. She quit her job as Govenor in the middle of her term? She had a higher calling? Yeah, right. She's just a female Rush Limbaugh paid by the Republican party to slam the Democrats at all costs. Teen Challenge Montana is no doubt a worthy cause, although I know nothing aboput them. Let's have Sarah debate Mick Jagger. I'd pay $100 to see that.

Sarah Palin is no role model for teenage girls. I don't know why Teen Challenge aligned themselves with her. There are so many other woman who would have drawn a more diverse crowd and who could have helped the cause of Teen Challenge. Sarah Palin will go anywhere to say anything for money. She is pathetic as a speaker, mother, a woman, and politician.

I thought all you peace loving ,dope smoking, live and let live, non working liberals ,had open minds. If she chooses to come here and speak let her, if she is as dumb as you believe her to be she wont hurt you or damage what ever it is you believe in .From your statements most of you are female or at least very feminine, just because she combs her hair, shaves and doesnt smell like a bear doesnt mean shes a threat to you .Attack her all you want it just makes more people back her .At least people that still have jobs and are willing to work .You are bitching about her fee ? take a good look at where all the bailout/stimulas money went and is still going.Take a good look at the billions thrown at banks, car companys and bogus jobs . It never ceases to amaze me that when the takers and wards of the state find something to focus their" expanded minds" on ,its usually something as stupid as your statements about a woman you know nothing about only what our bs media wants you to believe so fluffy, zoo, shoe, jjp ,editor I wonder how many of you are contributing to this economy you seem so happy watch go down the tube .Sarah has a good message she not perfect but her heart is with the people

And now she Demands 100K...If you were paying a contractor to build your house and he quit and walked half way thru, would you pay him the many thousands you both agreed upon to finish the job? Would all your neighbors be calling and saying " what a great job you did" and book him to build them a house with automatic air conditioning? I don t think so, So Please tell me why anyone would pay for Palin!!! Oh and lets not forget what a lier she is! Did everyone forget the lies SHE told about her daughters baby..... Why can people support her, she should have been sent home, thrown on her knees and spanked by everyone in her state of Alaska

I sgree with the teacher in Homer, AK. She took an oath when she took office to lead, and as soon as money was waved in her face, why she took that opportunity to appear everywhere, endorse and write (?) books, to promote herself every opportunity she got, to promote her warped family ideals, to keep spewing the hatred she has and contempt for our leader. I don't admire her, and the only reason I'd be going is to protest her visit there. I'm also quite tired of hearing the word socialist for anyone that disagrees with her, and is solidly behind our President

I think she speaks for herself as to how qualified she is in any area. She is the reason McCain just out and out lost. Even I, a strong independent, who votes my work, was considering McCain until he brought her on board. She makes the whole party look bad. Why is it that when one has to toss out rude remarks towards a "liberal" they quite frequently feel the need to include the 'dope smoking' statement? Just in case you didn't notice, WE DOPE SMOKERS VOTE and not always for the Liberal side of things. Don't always be so quick to judge us as we come from all walks of life to be here. Not just conservative or liberal. We listen and watch and we pay attention just like the rest of you and are involved too. Is it not obvious? Medical Marijuana is legal in Montana. There is a majority here that decided that one! Send our thought to Ms. Palin while you are there; our thoghts of her going home and staying home with her own teens that need her.
