First Friday Rundown

This week's print edition highlights two promising First Friday shows: Student work at The Clay Studio of Missoula (1106 Hawthorne St. #A) and Her Picture in a Frame at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography Gallery (210 N. Higgins Ave.), an exhibit by celebrated National Geographic photographer William Albert Allard. But that's just the tip of this week's offerings.
We'll also be hitting central downtown for the Dana Gallery’s (246 N. Higgins Ave.) Plein Air exhibit, the Missoula Art Museum’s (MAM) (335 N. Pattee St.) artists’ reception for their meaty Montana Triennial exhibit (avec refreshments, no less).
Both of those are pretty obvious stops, so we'll also venture to the Meloy and Paxson Galleries in UM’s PAR/TV Center for Capture the Moment, the largest display of Pulitzer Prize winning photos—143, to be exact—ever to travel the U.S. Among the stunning images, you'll see the famous shot of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald, Babe Ruth's retirement and the World Trade Center attack.
At the Ceretana Gallery (801 Sherwood) on the other side of the tracks, you’ll find quirky, alt-art from some of our town’s most devilish experimenters, including Chuck Bordell, Brian Elling, Mathew McCornack, Brook Kittelson, Patricia Thornton, Tim Thornton, Kim Shirley, Shana Mattheis and the Indy's own designer, Jonathan Marquis.
Then there's Noteworthy Paper & Press (101 S. Higgins) with a showcase of Marc Moss’ The Leaving and the Left—Teardrop on the Fire, art made of glass, photos, rusted metal and some soul-baring love letters and break-up e-mails.
Finally, if the prospect of a new place to drink beer hasn’t coaxed you over to the Kettlehouse's north side tap room (313 N. 1st W.), maybe some glass art by Larry Burton will light a fire under you.
